Hi,
Why exactly are you looking for a +12v signal? In simple terms, cars these days are not like they used to be. Functionality is now shared over a number of components, all which which comunicate in this case on an optical network "MOST". MOST allows us to replace a large number of wires with one single (orange in this case) optical fibre. Simple voltages on a large number of wires are now replaced by complex messages over a computer network. Each entertainment/infotainment component will have two MOST fibres going into it. The RX fibre is used to send messages to the unit (the unit receives network messages using this fibre) and the TX fibre is used to send messages from the unit to other units on the network (the unit transmits network messages to other units on the network using this fibre).
If you are looking for a signal when the radio switches on, you have actually found it! However the signal is in the form of a network message rather than a simple voltage. Effectively, a small part of the red light you saw pouring out of your fibre was the signal you are looking for. Unfortunately, without a good knowledge of MOST networks and optical fibres, a well equipped laptop ($2000), an optolyser ($7000) and a decent knowledge of C++ this "phenomenom" can not be harness in the way you desire.
All components on the network (e.g. Radio) have a connection to the battery which is 12v all the time. The network messaging tells a unit when to switch on and turn off.
In answer to your question "do I need to fix this?" the answer is YES! Infact we at the Saab Technical Development Centre here in Sweden are amazed that your system still works!!! Have you done a "quick fix" to the fibre e.g. taped it back together? If so, then your fix is only temporary. Believe it or not, it is also important how much light gets sent between components. I imagine your quick fix will fail as the joint moves and lesser and lesser light gets sent between the components.
We suggest you contact your dealer to have the problem fixed...
Sorry.
Best Regards and Good luck,
