Okay, I admittedly live out of my 1999 9-3 (5 sp) and have put roughly 50k miles on it in my 15 months of ownership but all of this milage is highway. I was picking my car up from the dealer yesterday after they performed the 90k mile service, I was notified by the service manager that my transmission output shaft seal was profusely leaking. He went further to state that either I would need to replace the the differential carrier or have a tranny rebuild (big$$$). There were no guarantees that by replacing the diff carrier it would eliminate the noted excessive play the mechanics found in one of the drive shafts. I'm curious if any of the readers of this BB have had this problem and if so, could you elaborate a bit on your experience with it? I'm lamenting the idea of replacing the entire gearbox/tranny as it's almost prohibitively expensive for me to have this done. Thanks so much in advance for your responses.
