I haven't driven an M3 so can't compare directly, but I have driven an M-Coupe and found it amazing. My guess is that if you're familiar with the M3, you may find the stock Viggen chassis to be less sorted. BMW's strong suit is chassis that offer neutral, predictable, wonderful handling without sacrificing ride quality. Good, soid cars.
On the other hand, even in my midwest town of 100,000 of so population, I see enough BMW's (yes a few M3's) that I seldom look twice. I have seen one other Viggen. Ever. It may not matter to you, but I enjoy driving a car that looks fabulous and unique. As others have said, the Viggen's power on the highway is incredible. An the VRK will take car of the dartiness on hard acceleration and the SAS or Abbott rear sway bar will flatten the cornering. But I've done neither of those updates and find the Viggen an absolute joy to drive.
