Clean & reuse cabin filter?

Just replaced my cabin filter (holy crap, there's a lot of debris in there!) & noticed the dirty filter is built like a K&N. That is, it's wire-backed media rather than the simple pleated paper of the non-OE filter. MJP mentioned in an earlier post that OE cabin filters might be washed once or twice before being tossed. Has anybody done this? If do-able, this would make paying extra for an OE filter actually less expensive (& wasteful) than buying the cheaper non-OE filter.
If you've done it, let me know how you cleaned it, how clean it got after washing, & how many times you've cleaned the same filter.
Thanks!!
