Up here in the Catskill mountains we are experts on snow and ice! Best deal going is the Green Diamond tires. I just put a set on my wife's new Jetta and am very impressed. They are actually remanufactured casings, so they are cheap! I'm running Yokohama Guardex 600s on my Saab and have had no problems. I got the size recommended in the owner's manual (I think one size narrower than normal 15"). Remember, narrower snows work better!
Both tires embed bits of carbide in the tread so they are a "studless" snow tire but give good traction on ice while running quieter than snows.
The Guardex wear great. Both tires are all snow tire - some others are snow rubber on top and the last third is summer tire rubber - so you don't get as much winter use out of the tires, but could theoretically run them as your summer tires. Not a good choice on a Saab!
Good luck!
Ron
