With a 2000 9-3, you most likely have the Saab head unit made by Pioneer which can only be married to the Saab CD changer made by Pioneer. (Previously, the head units and CD changers were made for Saab by Clarion.) The Pioneer units were used in the 9-3, but there have been a few reports here of some 1999 9-3 models that have contained the Clarion head unit (perhaps because some dealers still had some in stock and added them to certain cars at the dealer).
Anyway, the Pioneer head unit and the CD changer must both be integrated with the 9-3's security system in order to work. The good part of this is that it makes Saab stereo equipment much less likely to be stolen, but the bad part is the trouble you have to go through when legally selling a used head unit or changer to another Saab owner. The bottom line is the CD changer must be "divorced" from the previous car and "married" to the new 9-3. It is not so much marrying it to the head unit as it is marrying it to the car and its security system, to which the head unit is also married. This operation is done with the Tech II diagnostic tool and it only takes about 5 minutes to accomplish the divorce and another 5 minutes to marry it to the new car.
