My problem with the existing rack mounting is not only that it is inherently flawed, but that it get worse as the rubber sleeves on the existing clamps wear out. I am also worried about overstressing the next link in the chain if I overstrengthen the existing rack clamp. Maybe something between an all steel clamp (a la Abbott) and the existing rubbery clamp is the solution.
Not as effective as bracing strength to strength (as I see the real issue to be), but definitely easier and less likely to cause unforseen problems:
Replace existing rubber brace sleeve with the densest polyuerethane available. At worst, the car will feel like new. Right?
