9-3SS failure messages...

Over the past few weeks, I've been getting "Steering Wheel Lock Malfunction..." messages on the SID. When it happens, I lose all instrumentation, but the engine still runs and the power steering and power brakes still work. After about a minute, the message usually clears, and all instrumentation comes back on. I've been ignoring it up to this point because it has just been a nuisance. I was planning on taking care of everything in one trip when On-Star gets installed.
This morning, things took a turn for the worse, and I got two messages: "Steering Wheel Lock Malfunction..." and "Engine Immobilizer Malfunction..." I was unable to start the car, but I wasn't getting any messages indicating a problem with the chip in the key. After taking the key in and out of the ignition about 20 to 30 times, I was finally able to get the car started and immediately took it in for service.
Anybody have a similar experience who can shed some light on this malady, or am I just one of the lucky ones to have catastrophic electronic failures?
