My 97 900S was a really great car. For a non-turbo a very nice power band on the engine. Trouble is I also have a 9000T and I just missed the turbo too much so I bought a 99 9-3. I love the hydraulic clutch and the many small improvements. I don't expect a trouble free car from Saab, it's just not reality, but I am very happy with my 9-3 experience so far.
On the cd changer for the 9-3 you have one choice- Saab (Pioneer) and it sells for about double what any aftermarket changer would cost (only because it says Saab on the tag). Plus it must be "married" to your car by a Saab dealer. I've seen prices go from 50 to 125 bucks. You can install it yourself easily but programming you must pay for.
On the footroom subject there are many other cars with more, just have to try it and see what you're willing to put up with.
Best to you, Doug P '86 9000T 150k '99 9-357k
