Mice: the dark side

There have been a few threads lately about mice living in Saabs. They basically focused on the humor of the situation. I enjoyed them all, but it turns out there is a serious side to this problem.
Deer mice (althought not the house mouse) can carry the Hanta Virus. Humans can contract the disease by breathing dust laden with particles from mouse droppings. After our last attack from the mice I took apart the air system that feeds the filter on top of the fan that supples air to occupants of the car. The filter and the space around it were clogged with shredded hood liner, food scraps and mouse feces. There was no external indication of this infestation.
In addition to the risk to human health there is a potential problem for the car. The mouse material had clogged the duct that drains rain water away from the air system. If enough water collected to rise to the level of the filter it could leak into the fan and the exposed electrical leads.
So, if you have had any visits from the local mice, you may want to spend a few hours taking the top off the ventilation system. After you get the windshield wipers off it is a simple job. While you are there you may have to replace the air filter as we did.
