Well maybe it wasn't trouble as much as it was "great difficulty." I pulled off the wheels and loosened calipers. Then after pulling the small pin on the surface of the rim I had great difficulty removing the brake disc from the hub. Though no fastener seemed apparent, I ended up removing the brake disc by beating on it with a breaker bar. Though I doubt this is proper technique I could figure out no other way to break the surface rust. When the brake disc finally came off I saw signifigant surface rust deposits on the face of the hub where the brake disc mated with it.
Upon reassembly with a new disc I aplied a liberal amount of anti-seize to this disc/hub interface in hopes of never running into this problem again.
Is this sort of rust normal? Car is in Minnesota, '99 9-3 w/ 60k miles. This looked to be the first pad replacement ever - pads had roughly 1 cm of wear surface left. Brake bleeding was done with garden sprayer pressure bleeder. I used hot pink colored anti-squeal from Napa on the back of the pads.
I plan to do rear brakes next weekend if the weather again is pleasant. Any suggestions about how to remove the rear brake discs? I'd rather not beat on these too.
