You are concerned about the shock's body tube touching the tube wall that is inserts to? I don't think that this is an issue. The top and bottom details center and secure it. With Koni, they recommned that 50CC of oil be added to the strut tube to create a thermal coupling between these parts. No reason why you could not with any shock.

At 80M miles I would renew the upper mounts with KYB mounts from tirerack. There is no way the original mount will survive to 160 K miles. Replacing the mounts later requires removing the strut assy from the vehicle, so its like doing all of that labor$ all over again. That labour will cost more than a new pair of KYB mounts now.

Inspec the mounts, easy. If there are plastic covers, remove them. Hood up, engine off, p-brake on. Work the steering wheel back and forth, just tothe point where the tire tread is about to scrub on the pavement. As you do this back and forth, watch the strut top shafts. Any gross movement means the mount rubber is shot and it cannot control movement. Look at the rubber, tears are often seen. Tears alone do not write the mounts off, but the scrub test will.
