"Clunk" turning steering wheel when stopped

I should probably mention that this is a new sound. My PS fluid level is normal, and nothing seems otherwise out of place under the hood.
When stopped, if I turn the wheel about 1/2 rotation, then immediately turn in the other direction, I hear a "clunk" sound at the point where I change direction. It also feels like the steering is actually "loose" for a second. The sound seems to be coming somewhere inside the engeine bay. Under normal driving, however, the steering doesn't feel particularly lose, at least no more than most of us report w/o aftermarket braces.
I had it over to the shop the other day and the mechs "couldn't find the problem." So I showed them. They suggested I make another appointment. Last time cost me $35 for them to "not find anything." So I'd like to give them some potential useful pointers now.
Anyone have some input/advice/guesses as to what the problem might be? Steering knuckle? Bearings?
Thanks all,
Nemo
