This weekend I got around to replacing my broken stock fogs with aftermarkets. Be forewarned: It is not easy. I now have small, round, Hella Optilux 1000's in place of the Saab units.
Could not mount the aftermarkets cleanly unless I fab'd up a custom mount ($$$) ,or put up with cheesy, flimsly plastic mounted lights.
Or so it seemed....
Stuff needed:
Set of Hella Optilux 1000 lights (or similar small round lights)
You will not need the Hella supplied switch, relay or wiring
Screwdrivers, phil and slot
Dremel/drill w/ rotary sandpaper
Wire crimper
Waterproof butt splices
(2) 1.00 x 65 m6 bolts with washers
(2) 1.00 x 25 m6 bolts with washers
Black spray paint (or your body color, I guess)
Patience.
First, remove the fogs. They are held on by three screws, one on the top, (actually located beyond the inside edge, behind the vent covers)and two on bottom, accessible only from under the car.
Second, disassemble the stock mechanism. Strip everything, including the bulbs, wiring harnesses, etc. You will note that there are two seperate wiring assemblies if you have cornering lights ( I did). You will know that you have all off that will come off if you have a square hole in the back (where the fog bulb assembly went) and a round hole in bottom (corner bulb assembly) You should be left with a fairly light husk of a foglight assembly.
Third, pop the glass off the fronts of the lights, using a screwdriver. They are on pretty snugly, and the caulking is a pain. This may take awhile, watch for glass shrapnel.
Fourth , spray paint the front, including the silvery reflector bit.
5th, enlarge the lip around the square hole at rear, using the rotary sanding device of your choice. I recommend you grind the inner and lower parts of the square to accomodate the new light.
Sixth, mount the new lights using the holes that once attached the fog bulb assembly to the light body. These holes are located to the rear of the square fog bulb assembly. You should put the long bolt toward the outer side of the car and the short one toward the i/c gap. Using this method will ensure that your new lights line up perfectly.
Seventh, place the complete assembly back on the car. Disconnect the battery. Cut the wires to the stock fog bulb connection. Use a waterproof splice to join the resulting wire to the new unit. Note that hella blue is ground, you want to pair this with Saab black. Saab red - Hella white is the hot lead.
Eighth. Count the 200 - 300 dollars you just saved. Apply same toward cool upgrade of your choice.
I'll try to post pics to make this clearer. It works well.
