Hi,
I'm not sure if this happened with the 2002 9-3's, but some owners of earlier models have reported early head-gasket failures.
I noticed my coolant slowly dissapearing soon after I bought my 1999 SE HOT at 42K, with no signs of leakage. I did the old lay-newspapers-under-the-car-and-leave-it-for-a-few-days test with no results, and had run my hand over every reachable surface above and below the car to feel for leaks.
It turned out to be the headgasket, but the problem seems to have been solved with a quick retorque under warranty (now the car has 51K). I still keep an eye on the fluids etc., but nothing adverse seems to have happened. Like you, I smelled the coolant under the hood on start-up. There are a few other things to check to see if it's headgasket related:
Pull the dipstick and smell the oil for coolant, or look for a milky/foamy consistency to the oil.
When you start your car, get out and look at/smell the exhaust. Coolant being burned will often leave a sweet-smelling white cloud.
If any of these tests yield results, get the car in for repairs as soon as possible. You don't want to inflict any damage to your engine by letting a head-gasket leak go unchecked (coolant/oil mix doesn't do either job well)!
Best,
Lutfisk
