I bought a used 9-3 SE HOT convertible last summer. So far, so good. Saying that 1999 was the first model year is a little misleading. The 9-3 is essentially the same car as the NG900 they made for what, 6? years previously. What changed in 1999 is Saab supposedly made 1,000 miscellaneous changes to improve known problems, and they rebadged the car to a 9-3. So rather than view this as a first year of production, consider it the first year of improved production. I have never operated the NG900 convert, but am told the roof hydraulics have been improved on the 9-3's.
On my car the previous owner had various things, including the SID, fixed under warranty. I honestly forget what else they had done, but there were 2-3 other service visits in their 3-year lease. My 9 months of ownership have included battery replacment, window roller glide assemblies repaired to eliminate squeaks, and I am about to get a broken antenna motor replaced before warranty expires in several months.
The car is a blast to drive - great pick-up(5 speed), and it is very comfortable. The downsides are limited blind spot visibility, rear seat access is awkward, there are no useful cup holders, it suffers from steep depreciation, and it has proven to be less reliable than my Honda, but what isn't? I love driving it, and the car is a bargain if purchased off-lease. I intend to own it long term, so resale value is not a major concern for me. And my generally trouble free experience thus far make this a great value, in my opinion.
