A slipping clutch will often produce a nasty acrid burning smell, like overheating brake pads. Do you notice this after your groaning/acceleration troubles?
The slipping clutch won't "pop" off the flywheel necessarily; the slipping can be progressive. The friction surface just isn't locking onto the flywheel as completely as it should, but you're right in assuming it should happen the worst under heavy torque.
Is the groaning coming from the clutch pedal, or from under the hood? Can you get it to occure when slowly releasing the clutch in neutral, or only when you are slipping it in first gear? Does it groan on other gear changes?
What does your brake/clutch fluid look like? It shouldn't be too dark, and the level should be up according to the resovoir.
The only other part of the clutch I can see making trouble in this situation would be the master cylider. This works whenever you use the clutch pedal, so its problems should show up regardless of the gear you're in.
Best,
Lutfisk
