The purpose of letting the engine run for awhile is to continue to flow oil through the turbo itself. There are two reasons for this, from what I can tell, 1. To continue to cool the turbo and 2. the cooler the turbo when the car is turned off the better it is for the oil. If the turbo is glowing red and the car is turned off, the small amount of oil in the turbo could potentially be damaged because of the extreme heat. This would only be the case if the car was driven very hard just prior to turning it off. I believe that people install "turbo timers" for this very reason. Now, I also believe that under normal circumstances letting your car idle or the installation af a timer is not necessary. This type of "gizmo" is useful for tuners and the such. My $0.02.
