With some slightly used parts from a fellow saabnet enthusiast, I upgraded the suspension on my 1999 S Convertible. The rear dampers were leaking pretty bad and overall the cars handling was sloppy.
Then I installed of Viggen springs and SE dampers...
In and out of turns body roll is all but gone, torque steer is greatly diminished and overall the car feels much tighter.
Even with 17" wheels the ride is smooth and comfortable, though I do feel expansion joints a little more. Wisconsin roads aren't the best.
With regard to appearance, the car seems significantly lower, I expected about a 10mm drop, but it looks closer to 20mm. This is no problem, as I really like how the wheels fill out the fenders. For comparison purposes I can fit 3 fingers between the front tire and fender, and 4 in the back.
The installation was very straight forward, even for a mechanic who had never worked on a Saab before. I didn't change the upper mounts as they looked fine and the tirerack told me the KYB mounts were only made for the NG900.
One thing that my mechanic pointed out is that my ball joint boots are torn and they no longer are filled with grease. He recommended replacing them immediately (mucho labor!) before water could do any serious damage. Also, at a much lesser expense, my tie rod ends need to be replaced.
I still haven't gotten an alignment and won't until I have taken care of the ball joints.
Overall, I am very pleased with the results!
