I have nothing against their cars, and in fact I think they make two of the finest models on the road. However, new Bimmers make no freaking $ense, no matter what little headlight trick, shiny trim or new spoiler they throw on next year.
The resale value of Bimmers (and several others, for that matter, but we're talking of BMW) is inflated by the demand for the new models. Basically, the used value of a BMW is buoyed by used Bimmer buyers who like new Bimmers and think the used ones are 'close enough,' rather than by buyers who actually believe used Bimmers to be reliable/durable, good bang for the buck/ or classic in any sense.
BMW exploits this "close enough" market by cycling their new models in a particularly well calculated manner, such that each reiteration guarantees a generation of inflated used Bimmer prices. Its they same way fashion houses seem to operate.
Its fairly clever business strategy by BMW, but it doesn't justify buying a Bimmer on the basis of its future resale value; we all know that the resale value of the earlier version BMW takes a hit as soon as the new version comes out, thereby preventing used Bimmer buyers from posing their used car as "a new BMW, or near enough"
Basically, even if you believed the resale percentage hype, you'd have to trust that BMW wasn't going to put out a new version to put your version out of style.
Price a used Z3 lately?
