just got a 99/9-3, question about clutch

I sadly had to put my 91 900 turbo to rest, and just purchased a 99 9-3 with 47,000 miles. I Love the way the car performs, but I have a concern with the clutch. I have always driven a manual transmission, and I am finding it very difficult to shift into first gear without either spinning the tires, or if I let up on the clutch to soon the whole car will shake. It just dosen't seem right that I would have to rev the engine up so high in first to keep it from stalling. Is this indicative of clutch wear or just bad driving on my part. Also does anyone know if clutch work is covered under the 50k warranty? thanks
