I recently bought a '99 9-3 S Convertible. The SID had the common problem of missing pixels. No problem! Someone has already posted a fix on the internet! So, armed with the randmwilliams SAAB LCD Fix instructions, I popped the SID out of my car and started taking it apart.
First off, my SID1 did not look exactly like the one in the pictures. So what! I'm a clever guy and should be able to figure out what needs to be done using the pictures as a general guide. This did work for awhile until I couldn't find a hidden screw holding the faceplate to the innards of the unit. Accordingly, I used too much force trying to get the faceplate off and cracked the LCD display. Oh well, keep moving forwrd!
I was able to disassemble the unit and saw where the flexible foam was supposed to be inserted. I was expecting to find some type of connector between the ribbon cable from the display to the printed circuit board where it would make sense that adding this foam would increase pressure and make a better connection. Instead I found that the ribbon cable was directly glued/soldered to the PCB. Well, I added the foam anyway, which was actually two-sided foam tape. I had to give this foam tape a shave so that I could get the display PCB to screw back onto the main PCB. I put everything back together and reinstalled the unit in my car.
Well, other than getting a weird glow in the section of the LCD where I broke the display, nothing has improved. None of the missing pixels reappeared. Thankfully, the section I broke isn't so bad that it has to be immediately replaced, although I will end up replacing the unit.
Anyone know how much an SID 1 costs to replace? If I could do this over again, I wouldn't.
