by looking at the engine. If your entire front of the engine is badly soiled, welcome to the club. Also, check the coolant reservoir. If it looks murky, that means you have oil in the coolant, also a bad sign. The worst is lifting the dipstick and finding what looks like rich, chocolatey Ovaltine (tm) filled up to the top of the stick. Don't let the sweet smell fool you; that stuff is NOT chock-full of malty goodness. Trust me.
Hopefully, as other have suggested, you just have a coolant leak. However, your experience with the "where could my coolant be going?" feeling reminds me a lot of my own experience. Best of luck.
