Slipping in higher gears...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Clutch - How can I tell if it's going?`, SR, Mon, 5 May 2003 15:28:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
is the final terminial symptom. A high release point, or put another way, very little free play at the top, can be a sign. Find a big hill you can go up in 5th gear and see if stabbing the throttle makes the RPM's jump. You might depress the clutch pedal enough to release the engine and see if it re-engages firmly. Higher gears offer more resistance as a clutch integrity test. In lower gears the torque multiplication allows the car to accelerarte instead of the clutch slipping.
If it's not slipping it's OK to drive it indefinitely. You may improve the feel of the take-up with a new clutch, but if it doesn't slip, replacement is absolutely required. My wife and I nursed a bad clutch in our 93 900S for 40,000 miles.
