I took my new (two weeks old) 9-3SS into the dealer today to see if I could get the OnStar working. When I picked it up, I was told it was functional, but I got a "NO ONSTAR" message on the SID. People at the dealership were confused as to whether or not it was supposed to work.
This morning, the service rep told me that while, on my model, it was supposed to be a simple matter of programming (SMOP to us software engineers), he had not yet received the details. However, he said that a Saab rep had suggested that pulling one of the OnStar fuses (he thought #19 in the trunk panel), leaving it out for five minutes, then restoring it might do the trick. It didn't. He then "took OnStar off the bus" for five minutes to see if that helped. But when he reconnected it, still "NO ONSTAR". So I set up my 30-day appointment for the end of the month to get it (and a variety of other things) taken care of.
BUT!!! As I'm driving in to work, I notice that the SID now says "ONSTAR"! Hmm... So I get to work, park in the lot, and with a trembling finger, push the magic blue button. The SID displays "OnStar Demo" and I hear the mellifluous voice of Lisa Davis (whoever she is) describing the OnStar features. A second push connected me to the service center, and I was successfully able to activate my service!
Although the manual says that the one year of free service starts on the delivery date, I was assured that my year started today. They also include 30 minutes of personal calling that you have to use within 60 days - I'll try that soon.
So those of you with the OnStar hardware but no service, take heart. You may want to wait a while for the dealers to get up to speed on the correct method, but this disconnect/reconnect method worked in my case.
