I used Infinity Kappa 3.5". They cost about $55. Also considered Boston Acoustic FX3. This is an extremely simple operation. You just pop off the grille (don't break the tabs - just be a little careful). Two screws (T25 torxx) and the speaker comes right out. Just unsnap the connector and the speaker comes free. The Kappa comes with a crossover which easily connects to the speaker. I cut off the original Saab speaker connectors and connected the wires to the crossover. A little electrical tape and stuffed it all back in to the dash. Replaced the two screws and grille. That's it. Total installation time about 15 minutes.
The tweeter sound is great. Mid range frequencies are nonexistant and bass is very muffled. Turned off the Loudness to try to bring out more midrange, but this only helped a little.
I think I can get considerable improvemengt with a good midrange speaker in the rear. I'm resisting putting in an amp for now. I'm considering Boston Acoustic FX 6 ($120) but would like a cheaper solution. The rear speakers appear much more complicated to replace, as the interior rear panel has to be removed. I figure its worth $40 to have a professional do it.
Any other suggestions for a cheap 6.5" speaker with good midrange and decent bass?
