As a point of reference my MY '99 9-3 SE HOT was built in 11/98 and has the Viggen style intercooler which did not have the silencer typically.

How do you tell? Look at the intercooler if the inlet and outlet are on the same side then you have the older style intercooler. If this is the case then you probably have the silencer.

What to look for next (if you have the old style IC), check out the pipes coming out of the IC. The hard pipe on the lower end should be the one containing the silencer if its there.

You simply take apart that hard pipe (make sure the car is super cool, that pipe gets damn hot when running), peek inside and look for the silencer. It purportedly comes out pretty easily (albeit in pieces) with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Be sure to keep dirt out of the pipe while you have it apart to avoid launching into the guts of your car...

The Viggen style IC has a soft flexible hose and is not subject to the silencer from what I've read/observed.

Hope this helps, please update if you find any further deails or corrections to what I've described. Since my car had the Viggen style IC I could be missing a detail or two...
