Had a similar experience about a month ago with my 2001 SE 5sp, posted a question here and never followed up with my experience. One of my pet peeves is that many people don't let the group hear the final outcome ... so please be a better Saaber than me.
Anyway, my wife took my mom to the doctor, dropped her at the door, parked at a meter for 5 minutes to check all is OK. On return, just a click and no crank, all accessories are working, battery seems fine.
It's 3PM Friday in Manhattan, rush hour is starting, car will be illegally parked at 4PM, wife calls Roadside assistance. Car picked up in less than an hour just as I arrive, is towed to Zumbach who did a great job and had the car ready Monday afternoon. I will post a positive recommendation about the Zumbach experience later, I have usually only read only negative comments from others.
Diagnosis: The +12 primary wire connection was loose on the starter motor. Service advisor said they have seen this on other cars, apparently happens at the factory.
Advise you to follow the fat red wire from the battery down to the starter as far as you can and shake it firmly. I did not try this (or anything else) on my car and I am assuming that the battery is directly connected to the starter terminal.
Good luck,
Mitch
