When your mechanic says "half shaft" I take it as being Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: mechanic freaked me out - am I in trouble?, ACC, Mon, 12 May 2003 08:17:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
the center shaft going from right side of transmission to a support bracket just below alternator. For that shaft to "just" pop out of transmission, it's almost impossible without a snap ring missing or the whole support bracket being loose.
If the mechanic on the other hand with "half shaft" meant the drive shaft coming out of the left side of transmission. That one is quiet possible to disturb and not get back into transmission properly if doing a strut/spring job the incorrect way.
The drive shaft is held in place inside the transmission with a circlip/lockring. If the drive shaft have been removed (not really nessecary when doing struts/springs, but some people do) and not pushed back into transmission to the point where the circlip snapped back in place. The drive shaft will come part way out of transmission when driving.
Did you see any oil leaking out at the same time as the noise?
Hope this helps
