Driving home from work at about 1:00 a.m. (loooong, hard day), everything went from bad to worse. Long overdue repaving work on the Dulles Toll Road connector from Tysons Corner VA towards I66 closed both main lanes and forced all traffic (what little there was) into the side, "buses only" lane (used to be a shoulder, but they made it a buses only lane for those morning and afternoon traffic jams that crop up n that stretch). I'm going about 60, which is more than posted speed limit and more than I should go with a bazillion cones lining the left side of the "buses only lane".
Idiot in a Ford Probe with misaligned headlamps appears 3 feet from my bumper and is obviously pissed that I'm not doing 80, weaving inside the lane, looking for the point where the cones end and he can overtake me. At one point I stomp the gas in 3rd and put some distance between me and him, but there's a car up ahead and I'm not about to get unsafe.
At the point where the cones finally end (by now, Ford Probe idiot is back 3 feet from my bumper again), the "buses only lane" is forced to exit into the West Falls Chruch Metro lot and the next lane to the left opens up, but the far left lane is still blocked by cones. I move into the next lane over to the left, in the process whacking a massive pothole. The Viggen rims are going to be feeling that -- after a long battle with wheel vibrations at speed, they just got worse.
Moron in the Probe stays in the buses only lane, which exits, but he continues on the shoulder the same way I'm going. The road at this point goes onto a bridge that carries the connector road over I66, carris it sharply to the left and merges onto I66 heading east towards DC.
So I'm wheeling around the sharp bridge turn at about 55, while idiot is in the shoulder next to me barely keeping control of his car. I could have easily floored it and gotten away from him, but there still was a car ahead of me. Meanwhile, idiot in the Probe is trying to pass both me and the guy ahead of me using the shoulder lane, while wheeling around a bridge/entrance ramp to I66. His car is spraying up lots and lots of what sounds like gravel from the shoulder, given the loud "crack crack crak" sounds I hear on my car -- the ugly sounds of gravel hitting my Viggen at speed.
he speeds off at like 85, I try to get his license but it's dark and he has one of those "transparent" license plate covers. I'm left with a bent rim and several gravel-induced nicks in my paint finish.
AARRRRRRGGG! I HATE NORTHERN VIRGINIA DRIVERS.
