Hello
I have had 9-3 TiD for 20000km now (total 155000kkm). All the problems I've had are common to all 9-3's. That is squeking front bushings in cold weather, broken manual heating knobs (buy with ACC!) and the car is quite unstabil on uneven roads.
I'm going to try to make driving charasteristics better in June by installing Aero springs, Koni shocks and new polyuretan bushings to front (hope the squeking goes away also...)
The diesel engine is strong enough as you said when revs are over 2000. Just drove Alfa 156 with 165 hp and this "Saabopel" (it is an opelengine) feels actually stronger in normal driving. It consumes a little oil (maybe a liter in 15000km?). It is noisy as you know but mainly at slow speeds. Tire noises are quite loud especially with wintertyres with spikes but this concerns only northern parts on Europe (I'm from Finland). Consumption is under 5,5-6,5 l/100km, not bad...
When buying a used one, buy one with ACC and be sure that shocks are ok and that you're satisfied with driving characteristics. Testdrive it on uneven surfaces too because it tends to wander where the road is tilting at least in my case...
