The really big guys I've had fit better in a 9-3 than a 9-5. There seems to be more leg and head room. The 9-5 feels roomier because of the lower cowel height, the 9-3 has the SID up on the dash and a higher dash too.
Is it possible you didn't have the seat all the way down?
