The new Saab 9-3SS' have in their SID's a program that measures the factors that contribute to the quality of the oil or oil life by mileage and time. Taxi cab like service might bring you in at 8k, highway driving may not bring you in until 15k. I personally believe that it's OK to follow the SID recommendation. Many folks are overly obsessive about maintenance and that's hard to fault. Before unleaded gas and detergent oils 2-3k was the appropriate oil change interval. With detergent oils, modern oil filters and unleaded gas, it's the lead in the gas that causes condensation and crankcase deposits, the oil change intervals have gone to 5-7.5k. Now with full synthetic oil 15k is fine in my book and the SID program will recognize severe service and tell you to come in when appropriate.
Oil life monitoring and synthetic oil has become standard in the luxury car field, with apologies to our own 9-5, and 15k intervals for normal service and oil changes is routine for almost every high performance European brands. IMHO synthetic oil makes 15k intervals OK, but you'll find lots of well thought out foks on this BB who disagree.
