Generally, instead of shifting into other gears, all you need to do is leave it in neutral and let out the clutch for a moment. This spins up the lay shaft so that shifting into reverse (or first) is easy. Any time you sit on the clutch for a while and let the shaft spin down to a stop, it's tough to get into gear, particularly if it's non-syncro'ed or has worn syncros. (Not sure if Reverse is synchronized on our trannies, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were worn...) The reason it's tough to get into (usually) is because the dog teeth aren't aligned between the gear and the shaft. Shifting into certain other gears may nudge the shaft just enough to line it up for your desired gear, but letting the shaft spin always works, since the teeth just have to find the holes as they pass by.
Probably doesn't answer your question, but should solve your problem.
