Do what your budget and road conditions will allow. Going as high as 18" means you have to spend some big cash on tires. Bigger wheels tend to be more prone to bending as well (of course, a strong 18 will probably stand up a little better than a soft 17). As well, go as wide as you are comfortable with. I don't think you will notice much difference in normal driving when you go from say a 215 to 225, assuming that the tread pattern is the same. Sorry for the shady answer, but it's hard to recommend anything without knowing a few other factors.
