Used to drive an '86 9000T, now a '99 9-3 base.
The 9-3 is significantly smaller than the 9000. The rear seats don't fold down quite as nicely, and you don't have quite the amazing utility of the 9000. Still, it's better than most cars out there...it is a hatchback, after all.
Because it is a narrower car, the 9-3 feels less stable to me. I'm hoping that a new rear sway bar will help that.
The engine in my 9-3 is sweet. I don't know what type/year 9000s you have, but as much as I loved my old 9000T engine, this one beats it easily.
The 9-3 is newer, and the features and ergonomics are noticeably better. Gone are the three million buttons; the dash layout in the 9-5 and the original 9-3 are Saab's best ever, in my opinion.
Quality control is much better. The old 9000 had constant problems, and at its best, still had lots of rattles. No noise in my 9-3. Read up on the heater box on the MY'99 9-3, and have the head gasket checked if you're looking at a '99. Otherwise, no big concerns.
Good luck looking for a new car,
Matt
