Hi Jay
I have test driven the new 9-3 Vectors in both auto and six-speed and I was disappointed with the manual. I felt the detents were vague and rubbery (reminded me of VW manuals). I was seriously considering the Vector and reluctantly came to the conslusion that the auto was the better choice. All of my cars (Accords, 300ZX, Prelude, BMW 3-series, Audi TT and Aero) have all been manuals - and I loved them. Even the Aero 5-speed is better. But the technology on the Saab auto is really quite good and the manual seemed like a engineering afterthought. In comparison, I drove the new 240hp Accord Coupe with the six-speed and it is fantastic... brings tears to your eyes what Honda can do for 25K. Imagine Honda's R&D budget applied to the development of a new 9-3/9-5!
Oh well, Saab needs to do better with the 9-3, perhaps the superhot version will become a reality. It was a bit dis-heartenting to read the editorial in Automobile bemoaning the Subaru and Envoy infusions from GM - Better to let the marque end with dignity - they suggested.
Best,
Eric
