Yes, you can't easily replace the amp - though you can add another in the rear pretty easily.
I got a "High Level Line Converter" which converts speaker wire signals to RCA signals. I ran this from the rear speakers into an aftermarket amp. (Yes, this causes the signal to be amplified twice, but this is about the same as if you'd ran a direct lead out of an aftermarket deck with a built in amp)
To circumvent the car's 'MOST fiber optic system' for the new amps signal wire, I used the cigarette lighter inside the dash as a signal.
This solution originally worked pretty well, despite all the talk about a "high pass filter" to the rear speakers. When my car got its software upgrade (from the OnStar installation) the sound system improved dramatically. The signal going to the aftermarket amp definitely improved, as the bass response is much better. I am very happy with audio setup in my car right now.
