Bizarre gas gauge behavior

this has happened a total of three times now, the gas gauge will suddenly drop to empty, and the low fuel warning light at the bottom of the gauge lights up. Then a minute or less later, the gauge climbs back up to normal position. The DTE on the SID is still accurate while this is happening. This tells me a couple of things, 1) that the low fuel light is dependent totally upon the physical movement of the gauge itself [this is irrelevant to my situation, but I remember some posts where people were asking about the gauge] 2) the float in the tank is still sending accurate information to the car, since the DTE still works during these "freakouts" (ie, the consumption of fuel is being measured, and the remaining amount of fuel in the tank is also being measured). Any similar experiences, or thoughts about this? I suppose a ground somewhere, but there seem to be a million grounds according to the Haynes manual. Thanks.
