There is a wire for the AC clutch with a disconnect, near the compressor. Find it and check for 12V on the wire from the harness side. If there is 12V there is a compressor problem. If not, the compressor may be ok. The system will not power the compressor if the system pressure is too low, thats the pressure switch at the reciever/dryer behind the grill. A simple pressure test at the low pressure riser near the battery would settle that issue.
If the compressor gets 12V and does not work, there is an over-temp switch that may have failed, its on the compressor. It is not designed to cycle a lot and will then fail. If the anti-frost switch at the evap core does not work, then this will lead to failure of the over-temp switch on the compressor. So both should be replaced.
