June 28, 2002:
Battery "self-combusted" - replaced under warranty with a maintenance free model.

June 25, 2003:
Less than year-old "maintenance free" battery plastic "cell cap" came loose. End result, all of the battery water evaporated in the hot weather and, as above, self combusted.

End Result:
Vehicle out of warranty. I learned today that if you replace a part at the dealership even a day before the warranty expires, that you loose the part warranty for that specific part along with the car warranty (when it expires). I was in a hurry severely inconvenienced today, so while waiting for a ride to the local auto parts store, I took the liberty to contact Saab USA. I was told that no refund could be issued by the quality assurance representative. Not good enough. I explained to her that the same part failing twice in a year is absolutely not acceptable, and that her lack of accomodation would surely have me looking at other manufacturers when I sell my car. I asked her to review my case with her team and report back to me by the end of her day with specific next steps that we can explore. In short, she had no choice but to say "yes." So, at 4:55 EST this evening, I get a call, offering me a full refund for the battery that I installed in my business attire. The Energizer maintenance free battery, by the way, was $90.

Receipt faxed and refund on the way. A good ending to an annoying afternoon. Again, a praise to Saab USA quality assurance.
