The belt goes from the crankshaft, up to a large stamped steel idler/tensioner and down around the alternator. This gives the small alternator wheel a large amount of contact to get more traction. From the alternator it goes up to the fixed small plastic idler wheel, then down to the plastic idler wheel above the crankshaft and back up to the power steering pump wheel. If you do a short belt mod, the belt skips the lower idler wheel and goes straight across the engine to the power steering pump wheel. From the PS pump the belt goes down to the AC compressor and back up, across the water pump wheel and then back to the crankshaft.
So there is not an idler wheel near the A/C. So it would appear that the The A/C compressor has locked up. It would be better if the water pump had seized, but that is wishful thinking.
