16 or 17" rims with good tires, suggest S-03's will provide all the grip that you need. Then you need the suspension to do its part.
Bushings and rack brace, Konis, springs and SAS will corner extremely and will ride very nice on highway trips. You have 16" wheels now. I would not leave those behind if they still have good tires.
17" rims will also bend easier than the 16", and will not run as smooth. And with the lower profile tires, you need higher pressures to protect the rim from road damage. So the low profile and the added pressure both contribute to road harshness.
Changes in the suspension will do more than going from 16" to 17" rims.
If you get the suspension right, but you feel every bump in the road, then that is not the best outcome. Sometimes bigger is better but most of the time, too big really sucks. When a vehicle is setup right and feels good all of the time, you don't see the outside of the vehicle and what is looks like is not too important.
If you get lower springs, consider cutting the front bump stops back as well. This will retain some of the already limited travel of the front struts before they hit the stops. This can help protect the wheels too.
Remember, that the basic front suspention from the factory really needs some help to work well, but when modified, it can be great. If you get fancy wheels and tires and don't work on the suspesion, a vehicle with stock rims and good tires that has the suspension modified will outperform the vehicle that only has the wheels and tires upgraded. So the weak link is not the factory 16" rims. So don't fix what is not broke. I had the stock 16" rims, did Koni's, SAS, VRK and kept the stock SE springs and cut the bump stops down. The corning seemed to be all that one could as for. I never found the limits. Someone who did track work probably would, but that setup exceeded my needs.
