It's all about having an accurate front stage. You don't want highs confusing the image coming from multiple directions. The doors should be used for lower, less directional frequencies. Definitely, Dynamat the doors.
After a lot of research and auditioning, I chose CDT HD-62 component speakers with silk dome tweeters. I find the crossovers perfectly transparent. What a gorgeous, full, non-abrasive and accurate sound they have.
Powering the speakers properly is important. I chose an a/d/s powerplate 4x100W amp. 100W for each channel up front, rear fills run on head unit power and 2 channels bridged providing 300W for subs.
With good components, high quality crossovers and properly focused tweeters you won't know where the sound is coming from, you’ll just see the image!
Do some research, component speakers don't need to cost you an arm and a leg, but the investment will be rewarding.
Audition whatever speakers you're thinking of going with before you buy. For example; some people will recommend MB Quarts, I find MBQs unbearably harsh.
The newsgroup: rec.audio.car is a valuable resource.
Good luck!
