The Bosch MAFs have been quite bad for VW diesel owners. Some change to Pielburgh (sp?) units from MB's. What brand and part number do you have. Find it and do a web search.
Some go out of spec from deposits. The units can be removed and cleaned with a 'plastic safe' electronics spray cleaner. It must not be a lubricating spray! But deposits can affect performance but don't create significant problems. You can check that the air filter is OK. Look for black or dark brown deposits on the leading edges of the upstream screen. Some deposits are caused by fumes from the crankcase vent hose when the engine is shut down.
Whats the problem as you see it? If they fail the ECU will go into a limp home mode. The TDI folks call that a 'warp field collapse'
