Power Steering Sudden fluid loss

I have noted a few threads on this.. but I am looking for a reason for this failure:
On Vacation (of course) driving 4 hours from home. Very hot day, around 96 deg F...Driving up a long winding hill.. the car behind me waves me over, because I am putting out plumes of smoke, and the steering felt wierd.. turning right was off.. felt like a bad tire. The Power Steering fluid reservoir was empty, and smoky. ack! Oil all over the place in front passenger side, near the pump. The belt was throwing oil everywhere. After obsessing over it, I got some Pentosyn CHF11S per the manual from a BMW dealer (At least BMW has dealerships, there are very few Saab dealers in Oregon). Refilled the oil, cleaned up under the hood. Drove it gingerly fore a few miles.. no oil loss in reservoir. Ended up driving the car the 260 miles home, while checking the level.. Still no loss that I can see..car feels fine.
Q: What could cause a sudden loss of oil like that.. then just go away? Is it heat related? I was driving at a supermarket parking lot just before the leak.. with lots of near lock turning...I see others have experienced this.. What ended up being the problem? Is there a failed clamp or something? I am going to take it in.. but I can't account for the problem coming and going like it did...
Any experiences out there?
