Is the Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil we're talking about the same as what was available in mid '80s when I used it? It was a GL5 gear oil, so I'd only use it in a gearbox that's supposed to take a GL5 oil in the first place.

Our '01 9³ came with a synthetic gear oil, but not the newer MTF0063. They're supposed to be incompatible, so that's why you do a couple drain/fill cycles.

Ours has stuck in gear slightly, maybe 40 or 50 times in 30k miles. Never a real problem, but there's a definite feeling of breaking it free. Otherwise it shifts beautifully. The dealer couldn't get it to stick, so they wouldn't change it to MTF0063 under warranty. Yet...

Finally, check out all the TSN sponsor sites. I can't remember which, but I've seen someone has MTF0063 for a lot less than $12...
