Wondering about oil sludging ...

So we have all seen posts about oil sludged in 2.3L N/A engines and there have also been a few turbo engines with this problem. The basic engines are the same to a great extent. The turbo's have a thermostatically controlled oil cooler and the pistons are cooled by oil spray jets. The turbo also has an oil feed. The turbo engines do have a larger oil pump to accomodate the added oil flow requirements.
So the oil pump is different and I don't know if later 2.3L engines also had the oil cooler. Another difference is the owners of turbo engines are to some extent quite concerned about things technical and perhaps better at getting oil changes done and using synthetic oils. So there is the human factor as well. Certainly there are examples of engines sludging up where neglect was a definate factor.
The N/A engine has a higher compression ratio. 10:5 vs 9:3 if I recall accurately. This would contribute to the stesses on the oil in the N/A engine.
So what am I leading too? What makes these engines prone to these problems?
I am wondering if the location of the cat converter right under the oil pan is part of the problem. The oil is not deep in the portion of the oil pan above the cat converter. So I am thinking that the oil there might be much hotter. That would probably occur in stop and go traffic. This is a problem for both engine types, but more so for an engine without an oil cooler.
Anyone have an idea about how deep the oil in the pan is at that location above the cat?
