The 9-3 was totally reliable and very zippy. It's quiet & comfy. It's very smooth and has all the modern gadgets. The shifter is better than the C900. I loved steering wheel stereo controls, too. Long term, who knows. But for 3 years it was a 100% joy. Honda/Toyota reliability with SAAB utility and performance. A pretty darn good combo, if you ask me.
The C900's are a bit more fun to drive as they're connected to the road differently (read: rough around the edges). It's a more "raw" driving experience. But, take a 13 year old car with over a 100k on the clock and it will require parts, service, downtime and TLC. It's certainly taught me a LOT about how cars work. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything!
Don't get me wrong, I love the 3 SAABs I've owned/leased. I just know that when I hopped in the 9-3 to get to work, it would get me there without any hassles, rattles, squeaks, seized A/C compressors, rattling ball joints, dying voltage regulators, crappy shocks, vacuum leaks, high temp guages, rust, gummed up AIC's, oil leaks, etc.
