This has been an ongoing issue with my '99 9-3S. The car runs fine with absolutely no issues. I just pull into an Auto Zone and have them confirm it is the O2 sensor. Usually the code says "short in the Bank 1 O2 ground circuit" or something close to that, Code P0130, I believe. Isn't that amazing I have the fault codes memorized!!! I wonder why?
Bank 1 O2 codes are related to the sensor before the cat, and Bank 2 codes relate to the sensor after the cat.
My conclusion? I can either pay my local dealer's ASTRONMICAL tech fees to tell me it's the O2 sensor, in which case, they would want to replace the sensor which will do absolutely nothing other than stuff their bank account with $400.00 and throw away a perfectly good oxygen sensor.
Or, I can monitor the "problem" and pull my negative battery lead
to reset computer. This usually works for weeks or months before another CEL.
My best estimate -this is a glitch in the engine management system which Saab Techs try to cure by changing the O2 sensor. It didn't work for mine and from what you describe, it didn't work for yours either. My vote would be to keep returning it to the dealer until they get tired of throwing away good O2 sensors and repair/replace the proper culprit. It's a pain in the arse but if it's warranty, I say wear 'em down.
Best to you, Doug P '99 9-3 59k, 86 9000T 160k
